THE NAKED NUCLEAR EMPEROR

DEBUNKING NUCLEAR DETERRENCE

A PRIMER FOR SAFER SECURITY STRATEGIES

By Robert Green

Foreword by the Rt Hon Helen Clark, Prime Minister of New Zealand

As the crisis in nuclear disarmament deepens, the nuclear weapon states, led by the US, UK and France, cite nuclear deterrence doctrine as the final, indispensable justification for maintaining their nuclear arsenals. Nuclear deterrence must therefore be debunked and alternatives offered if there is to be any serious prospect of eliminating nuclear weapons.

Although extensive literature exists on the subject, it is discursive, fragmented and academic. To the author's knowledge, no attempt has been made since the end of the Cold War to draw together, in a concise form, a com-prehensive critique of nuclear deterrence doctrine and to offer safer alternative approaches to achieving security.

The author first describes why and how, as the first ex-British Navy Commander with nuclear weapon experience to have spoken out against them, he rejected nuclear deterrence. Subsequent chapters cover:

• The Heart of the Matter
• A Brief History
• Practicality
• Morality
• Legality
• Safer Security Strategies

Where possible, information and arguments are referenced, with a selected bibliography; and arguments are grouped under headings for easy retrieval. It provides a quick-reference primer for the ordinary citizen with little prior knowledge of the issue. (96pp; illustrated)
